چکیده

In this Letter, we make an attempt to estimate the masses of black holes and their distributions in BL Lac objects. We show the mass of black hole MBH ∝ ν −13/12 pk L 3/8 pk , where νpk and Lpk are the peak frequency and luminosity in the first bump of continuum, respectively. We find there are two populations of black hole masses in BL Lacs: the first has a lower-mass peak centred at ∼ 7.0× 10M⊙ composed of high frequency-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) and the second is a higher-mass (> 10M⊙) population composed of low frequency-peaked BL Lacs (LBLs). We find that the black hole mass distribution in the high frequency-peaked BL Lacs is in good agreement with that of narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies. Considering the fact that the orientation of BL Lacs close to the sight of observer’s line is the same with NLS1s as well as this agreement, we propose two evolutionary routes among the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), low and high frequency-peaked BL Lacertae objects: 1) HBLs ↔ NLS1s (ṁ ≤ 0.1) ↔ IBLs, 2) HBLs → NLS1s (ṁ ≥ 5) → LBLs, strongly depending on the accretion rates in NLS1s. On the Bl Lacertae Objects/radio Quasars and the Fri/ii Dichotomy

In the frame of unification schemes for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), FR I radio galaxies are believed to be BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects with the relativistic jet misaligned to our line of sight, and FR II radio galaxies correspond to misaligned radio quasars. The Ledlow-Owen dividing line for FR I/FR II dichotomy in the optical absolute magnitude of host galaxy–radio luminosity (M...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

The Connection between Jets, Accretion Disks, and Black Hole Mass in Blazars

The properties of relativistic radio jets are thought to be closely connected with the properties of accretion disks in active galactic nuclei. We explore this issue using a sample of 35 blazars with very-long baseline observations, for which we can estimate the kinetic powers of their relativistic jets, the bolometric luminosity of their accretion disks, and the masses of their black holes. Co...

Velocity Dispersion and Black Hole Mass in the Blazar Markarian

The recently discovered correlation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion provides a new method to determine the masses of black holes in active galaxies. We have obtained optical spectra of Markarian 501, a nearby γ-ray blazar with emission extending to TeV energies. The stellar velocity dispersion of the host galaxy, measured from the calcium triplet lines in a 2× 3.7 apertu...
